We had a very disappointing site visit to Ardnacrusha today to discuss upgrades to elver trap. No further work at the elver trap has been completed since our last site visit in May and the fisheries manager and biologist did not even bother to turn up at today's meeting. Indeed, they were never going to turn up as they were at the IFM conference in Belfast. ESB continue to frustrate this process - and this is easy for them to do so as they are a large commercial semi-state company with Ireland's government regulators behind them. But it is a total disgrace not to have progressed the agreed elver trap upgrades this year - and then invite two unpaid volunteers to a meeting which they never had any intention of attending. It has taken year's of campaigning to just get this far. All the ESB have done with the trap is put the green shiny bristles (climbing media) on the trap. This makes it look like work has been done but it is no better for the eels. The agreed upgrades included dramatically improving the water supply to the trap to help elvers to find it, and it was also agreed to provide two new traps. But it is left to us to try and force the ESB to complete these changes and audit their progress. Why are they not doing this themselves under direction from Irish state fisheries staff? Meanwhile in Belfast another good laugh is being had at the wine reception.....
